Ever been in a situation where your designer just did not get the brief? A picture is worth a thousand words, which is probably why miscommunication still occurs even after you’ve drawn your instructions. Words are distinct and, if understood, will eliminate costly rework.  Here are a short-list of terms you can use to create targeted instructions for your designer.

Wireframe: Basic layout that does not yet have design elements

Bleed: Allowing a design to go beyond the edge of the page so there is no margin

Gradient: Fading from one colour to another, or from opaque to transparent

Padding: The space between a border and the object inside of it

Margin: The space between a border and the object outside of it

Leading: How lines of text are spaced vertically

Kerning: Adjusting the spacing between characters in a word

Below The Fold: Refers to the area of the page that the user must scroll to see

Responsive: A web design that adjusts the layout for different screen sizes

Resolution: The number of dots per inch
